Ben Rush invented this “Tranquilizer Chair” for the treatment of the insane. The idea was to place a person lost in a violent passion (rage grief, etc) into the chair and lower the black box, and make them sit so until they became calm, rather than locking them in a room, strapping them to a flat, unpadded board, caging them, or having someone hold them down. It’s sort of like putting a cloth over a bird-cage to make the bird quiet.
